Texas woman denied essential ectopic pregnancy treatment

Kelsie Norris-De La Cruz, a 25-year-old from Arlington, faced severe health risks in February 2024 due to an ectopic pregnancy. Despite laws permitting treatment for such conditions, initial reluctance by doctors to perform necessary surgery due to legal fears denied her critical medical care. She ultimately received emergency surgery at a different hospital after her condition worsened, nearly costing her life and demonstrating the life-threatening impact of legal ambiguities on emergency medical care for women with pregnancy complications. While Kelsie’s mother Stephanie had initially applauded Texas laws protecting the unborn, she never imagined such laws could prevent women from accessing lifesaving care, completely changing her mind on existing abortion bans. In August 2024, the Center for Reproductive Rights filed lawsuits against two Texas hospitals on behalf of Kelsie Norris-De La Cruz and Kyleigh Thurman for denying them ectopic pregnancy care that endangered their lives, permanently damaged their reproductive organs, and jeopardized their future fertility.
